One of the absolute musts at this year's Cape Winelands Film Festival is a focus on the innovative young French director, Francois Ozon. Thibaut Schilt, an expert on French cinema and Ozon's work, wrote the following about this great filmmaker: Occasionally referred to as the enfant terrible of French cinema, François Ozon has in but a few years acquired a solid reputation as an original, successful and provocative (or thought-provoking, depending on one's tastes) filmmaker, both in France and abroad. |

Tribute to Ingmar Bergman |
"No other art-mediumneither painting nor poetrycan communicate the specific quality of the dream as well as the film can. When the lights go down in the cinema and this white shining point opens up for us, our gaze stops flitting hither and thither, settles and becomes quite steady. We just sit there, letting the images flow out over us. Our will ceases to function. We lose our ability to sort things out and
fix them in their proper places. We're drawn into a course of
eventswe're participants in a dream. And manufacturing dreams, that's
a juicy business." - Ingmar Bergman |

Tribute to Ousmane Sembene |
|
OUSMANE SEMBENE, considered by many as the Father of African cinema passed away on 9 June 2007. Together with the Egyptian master Youssef Chahine he was the first film director from an African country to achieve international recognition. Ousmane Sembene remains the major figure in the rise of an independent
post-colonial African cinema. Sembene's roots were not, as might be
expected, in the educated élite. After working as a mechanic and
bricklayer, he joined the Free French forces in 1942, serving in Africa
and France.
