Location

Imagine yourself in South Africa’s world famous vacation spot! Stellenbosch Wine Valley, just a 45 minute drive from Cape Town, where locals and visitors alike converge during the wine country's biggest celebration of world cinema.

You are sitting under the stars with film stars in an open air theatre venue, sipping good wine, savoring seasonal South African cuisine, and socializing with new and old friends. Five screening venues.

Dozens of festivities range from open air film screenings to educational talks on film, informal receptions with guest celebrities to over a dozen cooking demos, live entertainment, barrel tastings and fun for all ages. Imagine Stellenbosch where the oak-lined Dorp Street is home to museums and galleries as well as many student cafes and restaurants, all buzzing with film buffs. Do not be surprised if you bump into some other famous movie celebrity

What sets us apart from the many other film festivals worldwide is our distinctive approach to film programming, committed celebrity guests and friendly leisurely pace. You can have plenty of time to enjoy wine country's amenities.

At Stellenbosch, internationally known for our spectacular wines, there are several celestial film nights planned for our festival.

Wine lover or not, a visit to the Cape Winelands Film Festival is an absolute must as the region is one of breathtaking vistas and majestic mountain backdrops while being steeped in rich culture and history. A Festival-within-a-Festival
, for 10 days we offer a program of timely and fascinating films which evolve organically from the programming process.  A host of special events, tributes & symposia are in the works.

While its perspective is clearly global, the Festival is also a showcase and forum for the South African film industry

Celestial Film Nights
Get ready for an unbelievable experience. Typically festival goers arrive around 6pm to catch a movie in the Oude Libertas winery's indoor theater or to participate in a food sampling following a cooking demonstration.

There might even be a special barrel tasting! Most nights there is live entertainment before the feature film begins.  Some nights you might glimpse a celebrity guest mingling informally with festival goers.

Dinner and a Movie
No reservations required! Dining is al fresco.

The Oude Libertas Restaurant and Wine Bar is open nightly from 6:00p.m. – 11:00p.m. during each celestial film night.

Our menu offers delicious seasonal cuisine, beverages and wine by the glass for sale. The offerings frequently reflect and enhance the International culture represented in the feature film each evening.

Please note that no outside food or drinks will be allowed.

Film Buffs
Films from around the world (in addition to our several celestial film nights) screen at special venues throughout Stellenbosch.

The Cape Winelands Film Festival stands for quality films that engage, inspire and deepen our common humanity. Many of the films are simply unavailable elsewhere or are not distributed in South Africa.

We will set a tradition of showcasing remarkable international cinema and will provide a familiar environment which dedicated filmfestgoers will find comforting. Our program of features, documentaries, shorts and animation promises to be the strongest slate ever.

See a little of this, a little of that . Our film programme include films on :

  • World Cinema
  • Independent Films
  • Eco Cinema where we will focus on eco-friendly films about people and our planet
  • Arts in Film
  • Music in Film
  • Food on Film
  • Cinema of Conscience that will include films about social and political issues.
  • South African premieres!
  • Films from a specific country. Each year we will focus on a spesific country. We will screen as many films possible from that country and also experience their food and art. In the 2009 Festival there will be a spesific focus on Italy.
