The year is 1914. The place: A village in Serbia on the bank of the river Sava, the natural border with the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire. The population of the village is divided into two radically opposed factions - the able-bodied potential army recruits and the invalid veterans from the previous two Balkan wars. There is bitter animosity between the two groups.

At the start of the First World War, the healthy population is mobilized. The invalids left behind in the village try to take advantage of the soldiers’ wives and sisters. News of this reaches the Serbian soldiers in the trenches a few days before the expected enemy attack. To prevent a mutiny, the Serbian High Command decides to take the invalids to the front line and thus deal with 'the inconvenience'.

These extraordinary events, based on a true story, form the backdrop for an ill-fated love triangle between a young war invalid, a local policeman and his wife, a story that unfolds with all the epic power of ancient Greek tragedy.

Srđan Dragojević (born January 1, 1963 in Belgrade) is a Serbian film director and screenwriter, famous for his 1990s films that achieved considerable commercial success and critical acclaim. After obtaining a degree in psychology and film direction from the University of Belgrade, Dragojević made his directorial debut at the age of 29 with 1992's Mi nismo anđeli whose screenplay he wrote as well. An irreverent youth comedy set in Belgrade about a teenage girl who gets impregnated by a local playboy turned out to be a huge hit in FR Yugoslavia and eventually in the rest of the former Yugoslav countries. Dragojević received international acclaim for Pretty Village, Pretty Flame, a war-time drama based in modern-day Europe where two childhood friends see themselves on opposing sides.

A TRIBUTE TO ALAIN RESNAIS

The organisers of the CWFF in collaboration with the French Embassy, Culturesfrance, IFAS as well as UniFrance are delighted to celebrate the magnificent films by French master Alain Resnais. One of France’s most distinctive and highly regarded directors, Resnais was born in Vannes, France, in 1922.  He studied at the L`Institut hautes études cinématographiques before starting a career as a film-maker in the mid-1940s, making short films.  Of these, the most celebrated is Nuit et brouillard (1955), an eye-opening and devastatingly poignant documentary about deportations and Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War.
